Elements of Earth, Air, Fire and Water

Elements

Which Pieces Belong in Which Element?

People often ask how I decide whether a pendant belongs to Earth, Air, Fire, or Water. There’s no strict formula, it’s part instinct, part observation, and part a way of seeing the world that comes from my Druidic practice. Each Element has its own personality, and understanding those can help you find a piece that suits your energy or current mood.

Willow

Earth

Earth is steady, practical, and grounded. It represents perseverance, patience, and reliability. Pieces in this Element often come from trees that feel rooted and enduring, like oak, hazel, or alder. Earth pendants are for those who want to feel anchored, to bring focus or resilience into their day, or to remind themselves that slow, steady effort carries the greatest rewards. Earth connects to the autumn and winter months in the Ogham and Wheel of the Year. Times for reflection, planning, and conserving energy.

Air

Air is curious, open, and thoughtful. Leaves that flutter lightly in the wind like birch, rowan, or ash, often carry this energy. Air represents ideas, inspiration, and clarity of mind. Air pendants are for those who want to invite curiosity, focus, or fresh perspective, or to encourage gentle change and movement in their thinking. Spring aligns with air, when life feels fresh and possibilities stretch before us.

Fire

Fire is bold, transformative, and energising. It’s about courage, creativity, and action. Leaves that blaze with colour or catch the sunlight like sycamore, beech, or maple, often carry this energy. Fire pendants are for those who want to ignite motivation, embrace change, or nurture self-confidence. Fire corresponds to the high point of summer, when the sun is strong, and energy and growth are at their peak.

Water

Water is fluid, reflective, and deeply emotional. It represents intuition, empathy, and the feminine qualities of receptivity and emotional depth. Willow or alder leaves, or pieces collected near streams, often carry this energy. Water pendants are for those who want to connect with their emotions, nurture themselves or others, or invite calm and healing. Water is linked to the darker half of the year; Samhain and Imbolc, times of introspection, renewal, and release.

When choosing a pendant, it helps to think about what you want to bring into your life, or which aspect of yourself you’d like to honour. Some leaves are clearly one Element, others more than one, and that’s the beauty. Each piece carries its own story, shaped by the tree, the season, and the natural energy it has gathered.
