There’s something undeniably humbling about standing in a forest and realising you’re the guest and not the host. Forest bathing—or as I’ve started calling it, tree time—isn’t about marching around to hit a step count, reeling off Latin names for plants, or hugging every trunk like a sixties yoghurt-weaver. It’s about connection. Presence. Loitering with intent. You let the woodland do what it does best: hold space. You don’t need a plan or a purpose. Just eyes open, senses switched on, and a willingness to notice what’s already happening around (and inside) you.
The trees will also quietly bathe you in phytoncides—those clever little chemicals that lower cortisol, support the immune system and generally help untangle whatever mess your nervous system’s been wrestling with. Add a bit of barefoot wandering and you’re grounding too, literally discharging built-up static and stress. It’s ancient medicine, really. The kind that doesn’t come in a bottle, doesn’t cost a thing, and doesn’t ask much of you beyond showing up.
