Spring Equinox 2025

Ostara : What’s Bursting Forth This Spring?

The light is returning, the days are stretching out, and everything’s waking up—except, perhaps, me before my first cup of tea. The Spring Equinox marks that perfect balance of day and night, a fleeting moment before everything tips fully into growth and movement.

The Equinox Shift

For me, early spring always feels exciting. Winter is pretty much done its thing, and only longer, warmer days lay ahead. Usually, I’d mark the occasion with a long walk, but thanks to my foot still recovering, I’m keeping things a bit closer to home. If you’re celebrating, I hope you find a way to pause and appreciate this midpoint between the cold and the full flush of spring.

I’ve been busy sowing seeds, spreading compost all over the veg patch, and putting the frost cover on and then off the car again – some days the temperature can shift over ten degrees between day and night and other days we get all seasons in one day. But right now as I type, it’s clear skies, bright sunshine and birdsong. Perfect.

🍃 Simple, Sustainable Living Tip

Spring is a great time to declutter habits and commitments as well as the traditional spring cleaning of our homes and gardens. If something’s been draining your energy, now’s the time to reassess. And if you are doing a physical clear-out, don’t forget your local charity shops, repair cafés, or even a good old-fashioned ‘free to a good home’ post on your socials.

I am determined to offload the bag of old towels that have been sitting in the boot of my car for weeks now. I’m certain our local animal rescue centre can make use of them.

Ostara

Ostara, named after the Germanic goddess Eostre, is all about renewal and the stirrings of new life. It’s where many modern Easter traditions originate—think eggs, hares, and the promise of fresh beginnings.

In folklore, hares were sacred to Eostre, symbolising fertility and the return of abundance after winter’s lean months. Eggs, with their perfect balance of yolk and white, mirror the Equinox itself.

This year I will mark the occasion in a simpler way – join me by getting stuck in to some of these ideas;

  1. Plant something – Whether it’s a pot of herbs on a windowsill or a tree in your garden, now is the time to get your hands in the earth.
  2. Make your Own Spring Cleaning Products – Google “washing up liquid from Ivy leaves”
  3. Decorate eggs – A nod to old traditions – try using natural dyes like beetroot or turmeric.
  4. Make a seasonal table decoration – Gather fresh flowers, spring water, and symbols of balance (like black and white stones) to honour the shift.
  5. Watch the sunrise – A reminder that light always returns. Bonus points if you do it out in the countryside wrapped in a blanket with a warm drink in hand.

If rowan was keeping watch at Imbolc, then Ostara belongs to alder. Standing strong at the edges of rivers and wetlands, it’s a tree that thrives in the in-between—just like the Equinox itself, caught between light and dark, winter and full-blown spring. Alder wood was once used for bridges and shields, which feels fitting for this time of year—crossing into something new while staying steady. A good reminder that we can be both grounded and adaptable as the season shifts.

Who is Eostra?

Ostara takes its name from Eostre, a goddess of dawn, renewal, and all things spring. Little is known about her beyond scattered mentions, but her influence lingers in the hares, eggs, and bursting life of the season.

She’s that first golden light in the morning, the dew-laden spider’s web sparkling in the frost. She’s the frothy white blackthorn blossom standing defiant against the last remnants of a grey winter, the sudden whoosh of wings as a starling murmuration shifts direction, the scent of damp earth warming in the sun.

Whether she was widely worshipped or not, her presence is felt in every bud, every birdsong, and every stretch of sun-warmed skin after months of cold.

Alban Eilir – The Light of the Earth

Alban Eilir, meaning “Light of the Earth” in Welsh, is the name modern Druids give to the Spring Equinox. It’s not a festival we can trace directly back to the ancient Celts, but the idea of balance, growth, and the rising power of the sun is something they would have felt deeply.

For Druids today, Alban Eilir is about recognising the earth waking up—new shoots breaking through the soil, the promise of new life, and a reminder that after every long, dark stretch, the light always returns.

What has our jewellery brand Harmonite been up to?

We had a great time at WitchFest in Frome last weekend, meeting wonderful people and introducing our jewellery to new hands and homes.I’m also adding some new pieces to the stock for the coming weekend in Norfolk which I am looking forward to.  A weekend beside the canal in the beautiful city of Ely.

Despite not having any tiny leaves available for harvesting yet, I’ve managed to get a bit of a back log of pendants requiring stringing at the moment too.So I really must balance my time better, (i.e. stop mucking about in my garden, stop creating new recipes in the kitchen, and stop putting off the jobs that are not so nice, in favour of the ones I like doing!).

Anyone else a chronic procrastinator!?

What have I been writing?
Aside from a couple of new blog posts  I haven’t written much lately as been busy with the start of craft fayre season.
My new Forest Bathing book is making steady progress.  The cover is complete, but the editing is not. The printed proof of the first version has arrived and has been sitting with a red pen on my desk for over a week now.
Book launches are scary. There’s always that fear that you don’t get it right, you miss the bump period that Amazon gives you for new books, which then cocks up the algorithm and you have to start all over again.  There’s a good deal of planning involved to make sure this doesn’t happen…. and a lot of fretting.

But admittedly there is also a lot of procrastinating – brought on by the perfectionist in me who wants to make it the best it can possibly be but is also fearful of leaving it too long and overthinking it!

What have I been influenced by lately?
As well as keeping a vague eye on world politics, I’ve been shocked and devastated by the mining industry catastrophes in Zambia over the past month. The Kafue river runs directly past safari lodges that I work in and is the lifeblood to hundreds of thousands of local Zambians, not to mention being home to a staggering percentage of the country’s wildlife.I’ve always been drawn to books and films that explore the fine balance between the natural world and human occupation (and typically interference). So if you’ve read or watched anything that fits that theme, I’d love to hear about it.

One small business helping out another …

Nineveh House – Arundel
What a fabulous shopping experience. This old church-looking building on Tarrant Street, in Arundel houses two floors crammed full of independent, local, quirky shops selling Antiques, art, craft and collectables.
Browse with a keen eye and not only will you bag some incredible treasures but you might just find some of my books for sale too.  Oh and there’s a divine cake shop a few doors down that’s not to be missed.

A final word from the woodland…
New car park matting down at the entrance which seems to be holding against the mud and the vehicles.
The spring growth is already getting a spurt on and the wildflowers will soon be at their finest again.
It will soon be time for the first harvest of nettles and a session with the macro camera lens.Until next time…
Blessings from Rais!
